The interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, has declared that the party is prioritising a comprehensive grassroots membership registration as the foundation for success in the 2027 general election.

Usman made this known during her opening remarks at a multi level strategic stakeholders meeting in Abuja on Wednesday. She said the party was determined to build an enduring structure starting from the polling unit level upward.

Reflecting on the 2023 general elections, Usman lamented that the party struggled to defend its votes in court due to weak grassroots documentation. She noted that the party failed to fully utilise the structures of its affiliates such as the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress to anchor its presence at the grassroots.

According to her, this omission contributed to internal crises that threatened the party stability. She stressed that accurate membership registration from polling units to wards and local governments is essential for effective planning mobilisation and election day oversight.

Usman explained that reliable data would enable the party to deploy polling unit agents monitor vote counting and secure signed Form EC8A documents as credible evidence in the event of disputes. She maintained that no political structure can stand without a solid foundation, adding that no polling unit in Nigeria lacks serving or retired workers who could be mobilised to strengthen the party reach nationwide.

In a goodwill message delivered by Abia State Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emeto, Governor Alex Otti called for unity within the party. He emphasised that political success depends not only on numbers but also on cohesion discipline and shared vision.

Otti urged stakeholders to rebuild trust deepen communication and ensure that members at every level feel valued as the party prepares for future electoral contests.
