In the aftermath of Governor Abba Yusuf’s resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), several political appointees loyal to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have stepped down from their positions in protest. The resignations reflect discontent over Governor Yusuf’s decision to leave the party, which was against the wishes of their political godfather, Kwankwaso.

A notable resignation came from Sunusi Sirajo, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Political Matters. In a video shared on social media, Sirajo stated that he could not be part of what he described as a betrayal of the NNPP and reaffirmed his loyalty to Kwankwaso. He explained that he had previously submitted his resignation letter, but attempts to have it officially acknowledged were unsuccessful.

“After we got information that the governor has left the NNPP and there are expectations that he will join the APC, I submitted my resignation letter, but it was not accepted,” Sirajo said. “I am making this video to publicly inform everyone that I have resigned my position as a political adviser. I appreciate the opportunity to serve and the work we did together over the past two years.”

In response, Governor Yusuf, through his spokesperson Sanusi Bature, announced the appointment of Mustapha Hamza Buhari as the new Special Adviser on Political Matters to replace Sirajo. Other officials who resigned include Sumaila Abdullahi, Provost of the Anti-Corruption Institute; Sadiq Kura Mohammad, Managing Director of Kano Zoo; and Abdullahi Ahmad Namama, Senior Special Assistant on Intergovernmental and Foreign Affairs, among others.

Additionally, the NNPP flags have been removed from the Kano State Government House. A video released by the governor’s office showed Sanusi Bature taking down the party’s flag, and a correspondent’s visit confirmed the removal from the main entrance. The developments signal a clear shift in Kano State’s political landscape as Governor Yusuf transitions away from NNPP.
