Kano Governor Abba Yusuf Scraps Ministry of Higher Education, Merges It With Education Ministry

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has scrapped the Ministry of Higher Education and approved its merger with the Ministry of Education as part of reforms aimed at strengthening coordination in the state’s education sector.

The Ministry of Higher Education was previously headed by the Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo who served as commissioner for the ministry.

The development was announced in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson Sanusi Bature.

According to the statement the restructuring will lead to the elishment of a specialised Directorate of Higher Education within the Ministry of Education to oversee tertiary education activities in the state.

The new directorate will be headed by a Permanent Secretary and supported by relevant personnel to ensure effective management and coordination of higher education institutions across Kano State.

Under the new arrangement all agencies previously operating under the defunct ministry including the state Scholarship Board will be returned to the Ministry of Education.

In addition state owned universities and other higher education institutions will now be supervised by the newly created directorate under the merged ministry.

The government explained that the restructuring forms part of its broader education sector reform agenda aimed at repositioning the sector improving policy coordination and eliminating duplication of responsibilities across different institutions.

Governor Yusuf noted that the reform would also help reduce the cost of governance while improving efficiency accountability and the overall administration of education in the state.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to implementing far reaching reforms that will revitalise the education sector and create better opportunities for young people across the state.

He added that the Office of the Secretary to the State Government and the Office of the Head of Service have been directed to ensure the immediate and seamless realignment of the affected ministries and departments.

The reform is expected to strengthen oversight of tertiary institutions and improve policy coordination across all levels of education in Kano State.
