A former President of the Court of Appeal, Isa Ayo Salami, has stirred debate by stating that Peter Obi should not have been allowed to contest the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party.

Speaking in Ilorin during a courtesy visit by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism, Salami attributed what he described as judicial errors to the incompetence and inadequate preparation of some judges. He argued that certain legal decisions in recent political cases reflect deeper systemic issues within the judiciary.

Salami questioned the legality of Obi’s candidacy, pointing out that the Constitution does not recognize independent candidacy. According to him, the Labour Party had already submitted its membership list to the Independent National Electoral Commission before Obi joined, raising concerns about his eligibility at the time.

He drew a parallel with the case of Abba Yusuf, whose political journey has also been subject to legal controversy. Salami argued that inconsistencies in party membership records and judicial rulings highlight lapses in legal interpretation.

Beyond individual cases, the retired jurist expressed concern over the broader quality of judicial appointments in Nigeria. He noted that some individuals elevated to the bench lack the necessary experience and intellectual grounding, suggesting that factors such as rapid expansion of law faculties and quota based promotions may be affecting standards.

Salami also criticized the process of elevation to higher courts, stating that merit is sometimes overlooked in favor of regional considerations. He described this as a “tragedy” for the judiciary but expressed hope that reforms would eventually address the issue.

During the event, he received an award from WSCIJ, presented by Dapo Olorunyomi and Motunrayo Alaka. Salami acknowledged the influence of Wole Soyinka on his principles and revealed that Obafemi Awolowo inspired his decision to study law.
