The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has declared that it feels liberated following the defection of Peter Obi from the party to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The faction also issued an apology to Nigerians for having fielded Obi as its presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.
Obiora Ifoh, the factional National Publicity Secretary, made this apology in a statement on Wednesday, describing Obi as unfit for the role. The faction expressed surprise that Obi took so long to leave the LP, noting that the party had already parted ways with him and some of his supporters in the National Assembly since September 2024.
Ifoh said he listened to Obi’s speech during the defection event and questioned what new message Obi intended to offer Nigerians.
“The leadership of the Labour Party took note of the defection of its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi and a few of his supporters to the African Democratic Congress, ADC. We have patiently waited for this day. The party is finally liberated by this defection and as Party leaders, we count it as a blessing,” Ifoh stated.
This reaction highlights ongoing divisions within the Labour Party following Obi’s departure and signals a shift in the party’s internal dynamics.
