In a candid interview with media personality Akin Abolade, known as Mrlilgaga, Joseph Aloba, the father of the late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, opened up about how his life has unexpectedly improved following his son’s tragic passing. Aloba credits this change to a combination of his son’s spirit and divine intervention, which he says have brought him support from various quarters.
“Let me just say yes, my life got better after Mohbad’s death because he is my friend. He had it in plan to do many things for me but they didn’t allow him to do them,” Aloba explained. He credits the gifts of a car and other possessions to the benevolence of people moved by Mohbad’s spirit and God’s influence. This assistance, he claims, was the kind of support Mohbad intended to provide but was unable to due to the circumstances leading to his death.
Aloba’s narrative, however, also touches on a contentious note as he subtly points fingers at those he believes hindered Mohbad’s intentions, particularly his son’s wife, Wunmi, and her family. He alleges that they have control over Mohbad’s assets, including a piece of land intended for a church which ended up being Mohbad’s burial site.
The father further elaborated on his son’s plans, mentioning a house Mohbad intended to purchase post–tour, which he had fully paid for. This revelation adds another layer to the complex family disputes that have emerged since Mohbad’s death, including clashes over DNA tests and property disputes.
Aloba shared personal anecdotes from his life, revealing how Mohbad’s birth indirectly led him into music after the money from the naming ceremony was stolen, leading young Mohbad to become his backup singer at just one year old. Despite being a carpenter, singer, and pastor without a church, Aloba has now seen some of Mohbad’s dreams for him partially realized through public generosity.
His new ventures include a block industry, and he proudly displayed his new truck and Toyota Highlander, gifts from compassionate Nigerians. Moreover, Aloba has channeled his grief into creativity, releasing nine tracks since his son’s passing, indicating a continuation of the musical legacy Mohbad left behind.
Mohbad’s death on September 11, 2023, at the age of 26, has not only left a void in the Nigerian music scene but also sparked numerous legal and personal conflicts, including the arrest of an unlicensed nurse who administered a Tetanus vaccine to Mohbad shortly before his death.
Aloba’s revelations paint a picture of life after loss, where support from the community and a lingering sense of his son’s presence have led to unexpected changes in his personal circumstances.
