In a coordinated operation, the Joint Security Forces (JSF) successfully rescued six out of eleven sports reporters who were kidnapped by gunmen in Anambra State during the early hours of Thursday, October 10. The media crew, traveling from Lagos to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, had been en route to cover the Super Eagles match scheduled for Friday when the abduction took place.
The incident occurred in Iseke, located in Ihiala Local Government Area, a region known for its control by secessionist groups. This area has seen increased security challenges in recent years, making it a high-risk zone for travelers. The abduction of the journalists underscores the escalating threat posed by armed groups operating in the area.
The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the rescue mission on Thursday. He stated that the operation was carried out with a high level of precision, ensuring the safe recovery of six of the kidnapped reporters. Tochukwu assured the public that efforts to locate the remaining journalists are still ongoing. He emphasized that the joint task force, comprising police and other security agencies, is actively patrolling the area and working to secure the release of the remaining five individuals.
According to Tochukwu, the security forces are leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of the kidnappers and are committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens in Anambra State. He also urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities by providing any information that could aid in the swift rescue of the remaining journalists.
The incident highlights the growing security concerns in parts of southeastern Nigeria, where kidnappings, attacks by armed groups, and secessionist activities have become more frequent. The JSF’s quick response and partial success in rescuing the abducted reporters demonstrate a concerted effort by security agencies to combat such threats, but the situation remains tense as efforts continue to rescue the remaining victims.
