A mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney shocked Australia and the world. The attack occurred during a Hanukkah celebration called “Chanukah by the Sea,” where families and visitors had gathered in the late afternoon and early evening. Police say multiple gunmen opened fire on the crowd, causing widespread panic as people fled for cover.
Authorities have confirmed at least 11–12 people were killed, including victims and at least one of the shooters, and dozens more were injured, among them children and police officers. A second alleged shooter is in critical condition in hospital, and police are investigating the possible involvement of others. Responders also found suspected improvised explosive devices near the scene, which were removed by specialist teams.
New South Wales Police confirmed there is no longer an active threat, but the area remains cordoned off as investigations continue and forensic work progresses. Officials, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, have described the event as shocking and deeply distressing, with community leaders condemning the violence and urging the public to follow official updates and avoid the area.
