Akeel Abdul Jamiel, an Iraqi national, was charged on Friday with illegally voting in the 2020 U.S. presidential election. The charge was revealed in a statement by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York.

According to the statement, U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III, along with officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), made the announcement. Jamiel, who was not a U.S. citizen, allegedly cast a ballot in Saratoga County, New York, during the November 2020 election.

The charge is an accusation, and Jamiel is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. The offense carries a potential maximum sentence of one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.

U.S. Attorney Sarcone emphasized the seriousness of the charge, calling Jamiel’s action a “callous and illegal” attempt to interfere with the election process. Authorities have committed to continuing investigations into any efforts to corrupt the integrity of future elections.

The 2020 U.S. presidential election, in which Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump, remains a focal point in ongoing efforts to safeguard electoral integrity.
