Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on Friday that for a successful deal, the United States must abandon what Tehran describes as “excessive demands” during ongoing nuclear negotiations. Speaking with Egypt’s top diplomat Badr Abdelatty, Araghchi emphasized that progress requires seriousness, realism, and avoidance of miscalculations by Washington.

While Araghchi did not specify the exact demands, the US has repeatedly flagged Iran’s ballistic missile programme and uranium enrichment as critical issues. US President Donald Trump warned that Iran’s missiles could threaten Europe and US bases, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio stressed Tehran’s refusal to discuss its missile capabilities as a major obstacle.

Iran maintains that its nuclear programme is peaceful and its missile programme is for defensive purposes, rejecting any abandonment of enrichment. The latest Omani-mediated talks in Geneva marked the third round of discussions aimed at preventing military escalation, with both sides citing progress. Technical discussions are scheduled in Vienna ahead of a fourth round next week.
