The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Joash Amupitan SAN, has urged commission staff and Nigerians to uphold discipline, integrity, and accountability as the country prepares for the governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states.
In his 2026 Eid El Fitr message, issued by his Chief Press Secretary Adedayo Oketola, Amupitan described the end of Ramadan as “a victory of the spirit over the self” and said it should inspire renewed commitment to credible electoral processes. He highlighted that the Ekiti and Osun elections are critical tests ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The INEC chairman called on the commission’s more than 14,000 staff nationwide to adopt a zero tolerance stance on misconduct, stressing that professionalism remains non negotiable. He emphasized that the lessons of Ramadan—patience, integrity, and empathy—should guide all actions as the country approaches these crucial electoral milestones.
Amupitan also highlighted the symbolic overlap of Ramadan and the Christian Lenten season, describing it as a moment of unity and shared responsibility. “Seeing both faiths within the Commission engaged in simultaneous fasting and intercession reinforces my belief in our shared humanity,” he said, urging collective responsibility in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to staff welfare, citing initiatives such as the reintroduction of Iftar gatherings to boost morale. He also stressed that a motivated workforce of over 14,000 is the best defence against external political pressure.
The chairman disclosed that INEC is operating under the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, which mandates stricter compliance with technological innovations including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and the INEC Result Viewing Portal to enhance transparency and credibility.
Amupitan concluded that the governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun will serve as a litmus test for the commission’s reforms and readiness for the 2027 general elections. “The conclusion of the fast is not just a celebration, but a foundation for renewed commitment to service, integrity, and national development,” he said.
