Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has taken a significant step toward improving the professionalism and effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force by approving a Revised Training Curriculum for all police recruits. This updated curriculum aims to equip recruits with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the complexities of policing in Nigeria while adhering to international best practices.
The new training curriculum is designed to prepare recruits for the diverse challenges they will encounter in the field, with a focus on modern policing techniques and ethical conduct. According to a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejibi, the curriculum introduces a broad range of important topics. These include the Police Act 2020, which provides trainees with the latest legal framework governing police operations, and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy, aimed at educating officers on the appropriate use of social media and its role in policing.
Other topics covered in the curriculum include Computer Studies, Gender Mainstreaming, Sex Education, Anti-Corruption Laws, and training on Harassment and Gender-Based Crimes. Trainees will also learn about the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Act, Election Security under the Electoral Act 2022, Public Relations, Map Reading, and Cybercrime. More advanced subjects like Combat Crafts and Artificial Intelligence will also be taught, ensuring that recruits are equipped with a wide range of modern skills.
The implementation of this revised curriculum reflects the IGP’s commitment to fostering intellectual growth and capacity building within the force. By focusing on critical areas of training, the IGP aims to enhance the operational efficiency of new recruits while promoting a community-oriented approach to policing. The ultimate goal is to prepare officers to uphold the law with professionalism and integrity, ensuring they can meet the high expectations of their roles.
In his statement, ACP Adejibi highlighted the Nigeria Police Force’s dedication to continuous improvement and officer sensitization. The goal is to ensure that recruits are not only well-trained but also equipped with the essential knowledge and skills required to address the evolving challenges of modern policing. This initiative is part of a broader effort to collaborate with stakeholders in creating a safer, crime-free society for all.
