Foremost Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, has urged the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, to prioritise diplomatic engagement with the Federal Government in resolving his ongoing legal and political challenges.

In a statement issued on Friday and signed by his counsel, Pelumi Olajengbesi, Igboho commended Kanu for officially cancelling the Monday sit at home order that has affected the South East region for five years. He described the decision as a crucial step toward restoring stability and economic growth in the region.

Igboho noted that ending the weekly protest would help rebuild public confidence and ease the prolonged economic strain experienced by residents. He characterised the move as thoughtful and timely, especially given the impact the directive has had on markets, schools, banks and other institutions across the South East since its introduction in August 2021.

Beyond applauding the cancellation, Igboho advised Kanu to explore dialogue and mediation with the Federal Government to break the deadlock surrounding his incarceration. He expressed optimism that the administration of Bola Tinubu would be open to constructive engagement aimed at achieving peace, shared prosperity and national unity.

While affirming Kanu’s right to pursue self determination, Igboho emphasised the importance of negotiation in securing lasting solutions. He also warned individuals or groups allegedly profiting from unrest in the South East to desist, stressing that violence and instability hinder economic recovery and regional development.

Kanu was convicted on November 20, 2025, on terrorism related charges and sentenced to life imprisonment, a ruling his family has vowed to challenge on appeal. He is currently serving his sentence at the Sokoto Correctional Centre.
