Igbo Elders Call for Dialogue as Onitsha Main Market Remains Closed

The United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide has appealed to the Anambra State government and traders in Onitsha Main Market and other markets to engage in continued dialogue for the eventual reopening of the markets temporarily closed by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

In a statement signed by UNIEC’s Director General, His Lordship Justice Alpha Ikpeama, and National Director of Media and Publicity, Prof. Obasi Igwe, the elders emphasized that peace, not strife, is essential to sustaining the improved security situation in Onitsha and across the South-East.

UNIEC commended traders and stakeholders for the calm and restrained response since the closure, noting that the situation has been managed without escalation. The council described the temporary shutdown as a matter that can be resolved through consultation, mutual respect, and negotiation, urging against actions that could undermine social harmony, economic activity, or public order.

The elders called for an immediate cessation of misunderstandings and constructive engagement among all parties. UNIEC also committed to facilitating dialogue and mediation to ensure a balanced, honourable, and sustainable resolution.

“At this critical period in Igbo history, unity, calm, and collective focus are indispensable,” the statement read. “Peaceful dialogue and restraint remain the most credible and enduring pathways to resolving differences. UNIEC will intensify its engagement until normalcy is restored.”

The council stressed that cooperative mediation efforts are crucial for maintaining economic ility and fostering the shared future of Ndi Igbo and Anambra State.
