Ifeanyi Okowa, the immediate past Governor of Delta State and former vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has provided insight into why he and his political allies decided to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking at a grand reception organized by the APC to welcome him and others into the ruling party in Delta State, Okowa emphasized that the move was made for the good of the people of the state.

Okowa shared that, during his eight years as governor, he faced challenges serving without the support of the presidency. This lack of connection to the federal government led to the decision to join the APC, with the aim of strengthening the state’s relationship with the central government. He noted that Delta State, being a major contributor to the nation, deserved to benefit from the resources, goodwill, and opportunities available in Abuja.

He further explained that the decision was not about personal ambition or political gains but rather about the collective interest of the people of Delta State. Okowa acknowledged the efforts of the current Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and expressed support for his leadership. However, he highlighted the need for the state’s leadership to have stronger ties to the federal government to access greater resources and influence.

The move, which saw both Okowa and Governor Oborevwori, along with national and state lawmakers, leaving the PDP to join the APC, reflects a significant shift in Delta State’s political landscape. Okowa’s speech emphasized the importance of political strategy and unity in ensuring the state’s development.
