ABUJA — Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has stressed that transparency is crucial for Nigeria’s long-term development, warning that weak accountability systems undermine institutions, deter investors, and slow economic growth.

Speaking at an Anti-Corruption Day event commemorating the Corporate Affairs Commission’s (CAC) 35th anniversary, Dr. Aliyu, represented by the ICPC Director of Public Education, Mr. Demola Bakare, highlighted that transparent governance is now a domestic necessity, not just an externally driven reform.

Delivering a keynote titled “Transparency and Development: The Nigerian Experience,” he noted that weak transparency has historically fueled corruption, tax evasion, and illicit financial flows, undermining institutions and national progress. He emphasized that the effectiveness of transparency legislation depends on implementation, enforcement, and a culture of accountability.

Dr. Aliyu also called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, broader use of open data in policymaking, and active citizen and private sector participation in promoting accountability.

Supporting this view, CAC Registrar-General/CEO, Hussaini Ishaq Magaji, SAN, urged coordinated information-sharing among agencies, stating that joint investigations are critical for effectively prosecuting financial crimes and strengthening Nigeria’s integrity systems.

The event featured stakeholders from governance and anti-corruption institutions and included a panel discussion on enhancing integrity systems and collective accountability.
