Hamas released 20 remaining Israeli hostages, marking a pivotal moment in the two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas. This event was part of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire aimed at ending hostilities that began in October 2023. The hostages, taken during initial Hamas attacks on Israel, were handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and reunited with their families upon arrival in Israel. Celebratory gatherings erupted in Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square, with crowds expressing gratitude toward U.S. President Donald Trump, who played a crucial role in the negotiations; many chanted “Thank you, Trump!” as his plane flew overhead.

During his visit to Israel, President Trump addressed the Knesset, calling it a “great day” and a “new beginning,” emphasizing the importance of the ceasefire for potential lasting peace in the region. Following his address, he traveled to Egypt to participate in a peace summit with global leaders to build on this momentum and address broader Middle Eastern issues.

The ceasefire also involved Israel’s commitment to release over 1,700 Palestinian detainees, including 250 long-term prisoners serving life sentences, who would be returned to Gaza, the West Bank, or possibly exiled. While the release of hostages and prisoners has been celebrated as a step toward peace, significant challenges remain, including the disarmament of Hamas, the governance of Gaza, and the establishment of a Palestinian state.
