Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has described Sunday’s League Cup final against Arsenal as the “acid test” of his side’s level as City aim to get their season back on track.

City suffered a third consecutive Champions League exit to Real Madrid in midweek and currently trail Arsenal by nine points in the Premier League title race. Meanwhile, Arsenal are chasing their first trophy in six years and remain on course for a historic quadruple including the League Cup, FA Cup, Premier League, and Champions League.

Guardiola, speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, highlighted the challenge of facing an exceptional Arsenal side. “We have got to Wembley 22 times in 10 years, it’s an honour and a big challenge,” he said. “For the team it’s a big moment. They are an exceptional team, it’s a big challenge for us to see our level.”

The City boss also noted that while winning silverware can boost confidence, it does not automatically influence the Premier League title race. “Of course winning helps, just for the fact that winning helps. We can win the competition on Sunday and after in the league it is going the opposite way,” he said. Guardiola emphasised the importance of mental resilience across multiple competitions, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup, especially with tight schedules and short recovery times.

For the final, Guardiola confirmed that goalkeeper James Trafford will start in place of Gianluigi Donnarumma, continuing his role in all domestic cup games this season.
