Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has issued a grave warning regarding the alarming activities of Boko Haram in camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs). During a recent resettlement event for 3,800 displaced individuals in Konduga Local Government Area, Zulum revealed that members of the terrorist group are using IDP camps as hideouts after committing crimes, posing significant security threats to the vulnerable populations residing there.
The governor’s concerns come amid ongoing efforts to provide support and resettlement for those affected by the protracted insurgency in the region. Zulum called on the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to take decisive and immediate action to protect the IDPs, emphasizing that their safety is paramount. “We can’t tolerate this anymore. Boko Haram insurgents have infiltrated IDP camps, committing atrocities and perpetuating insecurity,” Zulum stated, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced security measures in these areas.
In addition to the security threats posed by Boko Haram, Governor Zulum also expressed deep concern about the social issues emerging within the camps. Reports indicate that some displaced girls have resorted to prostitution and drug abuse, practices that undermine the cultural values of the state and exacerbate the already challenging situation for IDPs. These troubling developments point to the broader impacts of displacement, as vulnerable populations struggle to cope with the trauma of conflict and the challenges of survival in precarious living conditions.
The governor’s remarks underscore the pressing need for comprehensive strategies to address both the security and social issues within IDP camps. As Borno State continues to grapple with the consequences of the Boko Haram insurgency, the safety and well-being of displaced persons must remain a priority for both local and national authorities.
With the ongoing threat of violence and instability in the region, Governor Zulum’s call to action serves as a critical reminder of the complexities faced by IDPs and the urgent need for concerted efforts to ensure their protection and reintegration into society. The governor’s advocacy for stronger security measures and social support is essential for fostering a safer environment for those affected by the long-standing conflict in Borno State.
