Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has announced the initiation of a comprehensive reform of the Amotekun Corps, the state’s security outfit established to tackle rising insecurity in the region. Speaking at a recent event, Governor Adeleke emphasized the importance of strengthening the Amotekun Corps to ensure it operates with greater efficiency, transparency, and effectiveness in addressing security challenges within the state.
According to the governor, the reform will include capacity-building initiatives aimed at improving the professionalism and skills of the corps members. This will involve rigorous training on intelligence gathering, surveillance, and the use of modern technology in combating crime. The aim is to enhance their capabilities in handling local security threats, including armed robbery, kidnapping, and communal conflicts, which have become prevalent across many parts of the southwest.
A key aspect of the reform, as highlighted by Adeleke, is the improvement of the welfare of the Amotekun officers. The governor noted that ensuring the well-being of personnel is crucial to boosting morale and reducing instances of misconduct or corruption within the force. As part of this, the state government plans to provide better equipment, vehicles, and logistics to enable the corps to perform its duties more effectively.
Governor Adeleke also stressed the need for better collaboration between the Amotekun Corps and other security agencies such as the Nigerian Police and Civil Defence Corps. By fostering a more cooperative relationship, the governor believes that the state’s overall security architecture can become more robust and responsive to the needs of its citizens.
The reform initiative is in line with the broader goals of the Adeleke administration to prioritize the safety and security of Osun State’s residents, ensuring a peaceful and stable environment for economic growth and development. As the reforms roll out, it is expected that Osun’s Amotekun Corps will become a more formidable force in safeguarding the lives and properties of the people.
