Google has confirmed it is working on a new operating system called Aluminium OS for PCs, laptops, tablets, and desktop computers. The company plans for this system to bring Android and ChromeOS together in one product so it can better compete with Windows and macOS.

A recent job post for “Senior Product Manager, Android, Laptop and Tablets” explicitly refers to work on “a new Aluminium, Android-based, operating system.” That mention helps confirm the name or codename for the effort. The listing also says Google aims to offer Aluminium OS on many types of devices, from low cost models to high end machines.

Google will not stop ChromeOS right away. During a move to the new system, ChromeOS will remain in use. The job ad asks the product manager to make a plan that “transits Google from ChromeOS to Aluminium with business continuity in the future.” Existing ChromeOS devices will keep getting updates until they reach their normal end dates. Google will also keep the older ChromiumOS code for some time.

This change shows Google wants one unified system for desktop devices while keeping support for current users as it shifts to Aluminium OS.
