Ghana plans to request the extradition of a Russian national accused of secretly filming sexual encounters with women and sharing the footage online without their consent.
The suspect, described by African and Russian media as a self-styled “pick-up artist” and online blogger in his 30s, reportedly traveled to Ghana to covertly record his interactions with women. Some reports suggest he used sunglasses with a hidden camera, though officials have not confirmed the exact method.
Speaking to journalists, Ghana’s Technology Minister, Sam George, said he invited the Russian ambassador in Accra to discuss the case and requested Moscow’s cooperation in securing justice for the victims.
George emphasized that Ghanaian authorities would pursue all available legal avenues, including activating Interpol resources, to locate and extradite the suspect. He also noted that if the suspect cannot be returned, Ghana could try him in absentia.
The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection indicated that initial investigations suggest the suspect may have already left Ghana but stressed that this does not lessen the seriousness of the alleged offenses or the state’s responsibility to hold him accountable.
Local reports indicate that the same individual may have engaged in similar illegal activities in Kenya. Under Ghana’s Cybersecurity Act 2020, publishing explicit images of adults or children without consent carries penalties of up to 25 years in prison. Ghanaian authorities have intensified efforts against online sexual abuse, including sexual extortion and romance scams, resulting in multiple arrests in recent years.
