The Government of The Gambia has confirmed the arrest of Sanna Manjang, a former member of the “Junglers” paramilitary unit, on November 29, 2025. Manjang was captured in Senegal’s Casamance region during a joint operation by Gambian and Senegalese authorities, concluding months of collaboration. He had been a fugitive since January 2017 and stands accused of serious human rights violations under former President Yahya Jammeh’s regime, including torture, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings. The Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) identified Manjang as a key figure in these abuses.
The Gambian government praised the arrest as a significant step toward achieving justice for past victims. In a statement, the Ministry of Information expressed gratitude to Senegal for its cooperation in regional security and justice matters. Plans are underway for Manjang’s repatriation to The Gambia, where he will face legal proceedings.
This arrest has broader implications for The Gambia’s transitional justice initiatives, as victims’ groups have long urged the prosecution of those involved in human rights violations from the Jammeh era. The apprehension of a senior Junglers member is viewed positively within the context of seeking accountability.
Furthermore, the operation highlights the strengthening security ties between The Gambia and Senegal in addressing regional challenges and preventing the sanctuary of Jammeh-era fugitives. As the situation develops, the Gambian government has reaffirmed its commitment to justice, accountability, and human rights protection, while ensuring that national stability and security are upheld. Manjang’s arrest symbolizes a crucial milestone in The Gambia’s quest to confront and rectify past human rights abuses, moving towards a more just society.
