Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara said on Monday that fixing the poor state of schools is a top aim of his government. He told traditional rulers in Port Harcourt that education will receive the largest allocation in the 2026 budget.

Speaking at the combined quarterly meeting of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, the governor acknowledged that many schools are in bad condition. He said the decline did not begin under his administration and was raised by opponents during the 2023 campaign.

Governor Fubara said his team has a plan to restore the sector. He noted that his experience in public administration shapes how he will manage reforms and plan improvements.

On health care, the governor pointed to work on zonal hospitals and measures to improve conditions for health workers as signs of progress in service delivery.

On jobs, he confirmed the government is committed to creating employment. He said planned hires, including the expected 10,000 positions, will reflect the state’s real needs and will not be politicised.

The meeting also allowed the governor to thank traditional rulers for helping to calm a past political crisis. He said their role helped keep peace in their communities.

Governor Fubara’s remarks followed the spread of a video in which the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, criticized how the government has handled education.
