On Thursday, leaders representing over 60 youth organizations assured the office of the Presidential Amnesty Programme that their members would not participate in the nationwide protest planned for October 1. The groups voiced concerns that the demonstration, organized by some agitated youths and civil society movements, was designed to embarrass President Bola Tinubu‘s administration.
The delegation, led by Duke Alamboye, President of the Nigeria Youth Organization, made the pledge during a courtesy visit to the Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Dr. Dennis Otuaro, in Abuja. Alamboye stressed that their organizations would distance themselves from the protest, which is seen by some as politically motivated and aimed at destabilizing the government.
The youth leaders reiterated their commitment to peaceful engagement and nation-building, expressing their belief in constructive dialogue rather than disruptive actions. They emphasized that the current government deserves a fair opportunity to implement its policies and initiatives, noting that the protest could create unnecessary tensions and harm the country’s image.
Dr. Otuaro welcomed the group‘s decision, praising their focus on promoting peace and stability. He encouraged the youth leaders to continue working toward the common goal of national development and to serve as role models for other young Nigerians.
As the October 1 protest looms, this development highlights the divisions within youth groups and civil society on how to address concerns with the current administration. While some favor protests as a means of drawing attention to grievances, others, like Alamboye’s coalition, prefer to engage with the government through peaceful channels.
