In the early hours of Saturday, May 10, 2025, a fire erupted at the Police Barracks in Omolewa, Yemetu, Ibadan, engulfing six of the 24 lock-up shops in the bustling commercial hub. Fortunately, no lives were lost, but the blaze caused significant damage to the affected shops, disrupting livelihoods in the area. The incident, which began around 2:09 a.m., prompted an immediate response from the Oyo State Fire Services Agency after a distress call from Mr. S.O. Soyombo alerted authorities. General Manager Yemi Akinyinka confirmed the agency’s rapid deployment, with a team led by Mrs. Adedeji arriving promptly at the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered the lock-up shops ablaze but acted decisively, employing strategic measures to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to the remaining shops and nearby structures. Their swift intervention ensured that only a quarter of the shops were impacted, preserving the majority of the market area. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with authorities yet to determine whether it was triggered by electrical faults, negligence, or other factors common in such settings.

The incident underscores the critical role of emergency services in mitigating disasters, particularly in densely populated urban areas like Yemetu, where fires can escalate rapidly. While the affected shop owners face significant losses, the absence of casualties offers some relief. The Oyo State Fire Services Agency’s effective response highlights the importance of preparedness and coordination in safeguarding communities. As investigations continue, local authorities are expected to engage with affected traders to assess damages and provide support, while residents are urged to prioritize fire safety measures to prevent future incidents.
