The federal government has initiated a strategic review of Nigeria’s tariff policies to encourage local production, safeguard domestic industries, and reduce the cost of doing business.

The review follows a high-level meeting between the Tariffs Review Board and the Minister of State for Finance, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite, where existing tariffs were assessed against rising production costs and foreign exchange pressures.

Discussions focused on supporting the industrialisation agenda, addressing challenges faced by local manufacturers, and creating a balanced approach that facilitates essential imports while strengthening local value chains.

Dr Uzoka-Anite said the initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to boost industrial growth and economic competitiveness. She emphasised the focus on data-driven policymaking to reposition tariffs as instruments for economic development rather than obstacles to productivity.

“Our objective is to create a tariff regime that supports local manufacturers, strengthens value chains, and promotes sustainable industrial expansion. This involves balancing essential imports with protection for domestic industries,” the minister said.

The review also examines tariff-related bottlenecks affecting manufacturers, particularly those reliant on imported raw materials, and explores fiscal relief options to help reduce input costs, preserve jobs, and enhance competitiveness.

The federal government affirmed that any adjustments to the tariff structure will be guided by empirical data on their impact on production costs, consumer prices, and employment.
