The Office of the Accountant General of the Federation has explained the reason behind the delay in the payment of February 2026 salaries for workers in the Federal Ministry of Steel Development and four federal agencies. According to the office, the delay was caused by shortfalls in personnel cost allocations for the affected organisations.

In a statement released on Monday, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, Bawa Mokwa, said the salary delay was limited to only a few ministries departments and agencies. He noted that the affected organisations experienced funding gaps in their salary budgets for the month.

The agencies impacted by the delay include the Federal Ministry of Steel Development, the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, the National Rural Electrification Agency, Kamuku National Park and the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria.

The statement explained that the issue came to public attention after several civil servants raised concerns about the non payment of their February 2026 salaries. In response, the Office of the Accountant General clarified that the delay was not a general problem affecting all federal workers but was specifically tied to personnel cost shortfalls in the listed organisations.

To address the problem, the affected ministries departments and agencies have been directed to work with the Cash Management Office of the Federal Ministry of Finance. This collaboration is expected to resolve the funding gaps and ensure that the outstanding salaries are paid without further delay.

The office also responded to complaints from some civil servants whose salary accounts are domiciled with Standard Chartered Bank. According to the statement, although the salaries had already been paid into the bank, some workers could not access their funds because of the bank policy requiring a minimum opening balance of seven million naira.

Despite these challenges, the Office of the Accountant General assured affected workers that efforts are ongoing to resolve the issues quickly. The office emphasized that salaries for other federal workers have already been paid.

Meanwhile, the proposed 2026 Federal Government budget projects personnel costs for ministries departments and agencies at about 8.36 trillion naira, with additional allocations for pensions and gratuities expected to increase total staff related spending.
