Federal Government Launches 500 Million Dollar SPIN Project to Boost Irrigation and Power

The Federal Government has launched the Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria Project known as SPIN as part of efforts to strengthen food security increase power generation and promote sustainable development across the country.

The initiative which is supported by a 500 million dollar financing package from the World Bank was officially unveiled on Tuesday in Abuja. The project is designed to improve irrigation systems enhance hydropower generation and strengthen Nigeria’s resilience to climate challenges such as floods droughts and cing weather conditions.

Speaking at the launch event the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation Joseph Utsev described the project as a major strategic intervention aimed at improving dam safety and strengthening water resource management across the country.

According to him the initiative will help ensure that irrigation and hydropower contribute more effectively to national food production economic growth and environmental sustainability.

Utsev explained that the project aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu which focuses on improving food security strengthening economic resilience and expanding infrastructure development across Nigeria.

He noted that the President had earlier declared a national emergency on food security which highlighted the urgent need to transform agricultural production systems and ensure reliable food supply for Nigerians.

Also speaking during the event the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Power Mamman Mahmoud who represented the Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu urged members of the project steering committee to remain committed to the successful implementation of the programme.

The SPIN project is expected to develop about five hundred thousand hectares of irrigated farmland across Nigeria. It is also projected to generate up to thirty gigawatts of sustainable energy while strengthening the country’s capacity to manage climate related risks.

Officials believe the project will increase food production create employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth particularly in rural communities.
