The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission FCCPC has called on Nigerian consumers to remain vigilant and insist on high product safety standards, while warning manufacturers and distributors that strict compliance with regulations is essential for operating in the market.

Speaking during the World Consumer Rights Day 2026 celebration and the 9th National Consumers Contest Awards held in Abuja, the Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC, Tunji Bello, represented by Boladale Adeyinka, highlighted growing concerns about poorly labelled products and regulatory violations.

According to Bello, such practices undermine market integrity, expose consumers to avoidable dangers, and create unfair competition for compliant businesses. He emphasized that the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018 clearly guarantees consumers the right to safe, durable, and fit for purpose goods, while placing responsibility on businesses to meet these standards.

The FCCPC boss stressed that product safety should be a priority at every stage of business operations, including sourcing, manufacturing, distribution, and retail. He urged consumers to carefully inspect products, verify labelling, and report suious or unsafe goods to authorities.

To strengthen enforcement, the commission has intensified surveillance and product testing efforts in collaboration with agencies such as the Standards Organisation of Nigeria and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control. These partnerships aim to eliminate substandard products from Nigerian markets and improve overall consumer confidence.

Although the FCCPC does not regulate prices, Bello reaffirmed its commitment to tackling unfair trade practices such as price fixing and deceptive conduct. He noted that swift corrective action is crucial whenever product defects are identified to prevent harm and maintain trust.

The event brought together key stakeholders including regulators and the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, reinforcing a shared commitment to consumer protection.
