The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has launched a 90 day food planting initiative in Haiti designed to bolster food security and build resilience against hunger in the face of ongoing economic and climatic challenges. The project aims to support local farmers with seeds tools and technical guidance while increasing domestic production of key staple crops.

Officials said the initiative responds to urgent needs as Haiti continues to confront food shortages exacerbated by political instability, natural disasters and reduced imports. The FAO will work directly with community groups and agricultural cooperatives to establish planting sites and improve access to water and soil nutrients.

The 90 day project is part of a broader effort to reduce reliance on food aid by strengthening local food systems and enhancing farmers’ capacity to respond to future shocks. FAO representatives said they will monitor progress closely and provide ongoing support to ensure that planting efforts translate into meaningful harvests.

Local authorities and humanitarian partners welcomed the initiative, saying it represents a vital step toward empowering rural communities and improving long term food sustainability. Stakeholders noted that increased food production could also support nutritional outcomes and economic opportunities for small holders.
