As the holiday season winds down, microbiologists are warning that leaving dirty dishes soaking overnight can turn kitchen sinks into breeding grounds for harmful bacteria. Warm, moist conditions allow microbes such as E. coli, Enterobacter cloacae, and Klebsiella pneumoniae to multiply, increasing the risk of food poisoning and serious illness.

Jason Tetro, author of The Germ Code, notes that kitchen sinks are collection points for various bacteria, including fecal coliforms and pathogens from raw food. Research from Cardiff Metropolitan University found that sinks contain more bacteria than any other kitchen surface.

Health experts advise:

Avoid soaking dishes overnight; wash them promptly or use a dishwasher.

Clean sponges regularly in the dishwasher or microwave.

Do not wash raw meat, as this spreads bacteria onto other surfaces and foods.

The warning follows a surge in foodborne illnesses, including E. coli and Campylobacter outbreaks, highlighting the importance of proper kitchen hygiene to protect vulnerable populations.
