Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health has reported its first outbreak of Marburg virus disease in the South Ethiopia Region, specifically in Jinka town. This follows the identification of a cluster of suspected viral hemorrhagic fever cases and laboratory tests confirming nine cases as of November 14, 2025. The strain of the virus is similar to those previously identified in East Africa.

In response, national authorities have launched extensive measures, including community screenings, isolation of confirmed cases, contact tracing, and public awareness campaigns to curb transmission. The World Health Organization (WHO), along with other partners, is assisting the Ethiopian government by deploying experts in viral hemorrhagic fever response and providing medical supplies and support.

Marburg virus disease is a severe illness caused by the Marburg virus, which is transmitted from fruit bats to humans and can spread through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals or contaminated materials. Initial symptoms include high fever, severe headaches, muscle aches, and fatigue, with many patients experiencing severe bleeding within a week of symptom onset. Currently, there are no licensed vaccines or therapeutic treatments for the disease. However, timely supportive care, such as rehydration, can enhance survival rates.

The WHO and its partners are actively involved in efforts to control the outbreak, support treatment for those infected, and mitigate the risk of cross-border spread. Ongoing epidemiological investigations and laboratory analyses aim to assess the outbreak’s extent and to inform further control measures.
