Brazilian teenager Estevao has shed light on why he didn’t step up for Brazil’s second penalty in their 1-1 draw against Tunisia, revealing that the decision came from the coaching staff.
The friendly match, played in Lille, saw Brazil close out 2025 with a frustrating result. Tunisia struck first through Hazem Mastouri in the 23rd minute, but Estevao equalized from the penalty spot just before halftime.
Later in the game, Brazil had another opportunity from the spot. However, instead of taking it himself, Estevao handed the ball to Lucas Paqueta, who unfortunately missed the target.
When asked about the decision, Estevao said, “It was an order that came. I supported my team-mate so he could score the goal. Unfortunately, he missed, but he held his head high.”
He added that Brazil must be sharper in key moments, especially with the World Cup on the horizon because in a World Cup we have to take advantage of these opportunities.”
Despite the draw, Estevao’s performance stood out. He nearly won the game in the final moments, hitting the post in stoppage time. The 18-year-old has had a breakout year, becoming a regular for both Chelsea and the Brazilian national team.
Reflecting on his journey, he said, “A very special year. I don’t think I had many ups and downs, but I was able to handle everything that happened.”
“Being here with the national team means that the work has been done well at the club and at home, so I’m very happy to represent the national team. Obviously, we always come here to help, and I’m very happy about that.”
