The Enugu State House of Assembly has passed a landmark law designed to harmonize taxes and levies across the state in a move aimed at eliminating illegal roadblocks and unauthorized collections that have long affected residents and businesses.

The bill titled Enugu State Harmonises Taxes and Levies Approved List for Collection Law 2026 was passed after detailed legislative processes including several readings and deliberations by lawmakers. The bill was also reviewed by a committee of the whole house before receiving final approval.

Lawmakers explained that the new legislation seeks to address the persistent problem of multiple taxation and unlawful revenue collections by ensuring that all taxes and levies are properly regulated and verified through the Enugu State Board of Internal Revenue.

During the debate on the bill Hon Iloabuchi Aniagu who represents Nkanu West State Constituency raised concerns about the widespread issue of illegal roadblocks particularly along major federal roads where individuals or groups often demand unauthorized payments from motorists and traders.

Aniagu stated that the law would help eliminate such practices and ensure that every legitimate tax payment is properly documented and remitted through the appropriate government channels. He also urged residents to verify any tax demand directly with the state revenue board in order to avoid being exploited by illegal collectors.

Another lawmaker Hon Malachy Onyechi representing Nsukka West described the legislation as a major step toward improving transparency accountability and good governance in the state. According to him a harmonized tax system will not only reduce confusion for taxpayers but also strengthen government revenue needed for infrastructure development and public services.

Hon Okey Mbah also expressed support for the law noting that a clearer and more predictable tax system would boost investor confidence and encourage business growth within the state.

However Hon Raymond Ugwu raised concerns about enforcement suggesting that the penalties proposed for illegal levies may be too lenient. He recommended the creation of a regulatory body to oversee enforcement and ensure strict compliance.

Overall the new law is expected to improve fiscal discipline enhance transparency and protect residents from arbitrary taxation while creating a more business friendly environment in Enugu State.
