Operatives of the Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) have arrested a 21-year-old man, identified as ThankGod Destiny, for allegedly kidnapping a four-year-old boy in Benin City, Edo State.

The arrest was confirmed on Thursday by the Deputy Corps Commander (Operations) of the ESSC, Richard Balogun, while briefing journalists in Benin City. According to him, the incident occurred on January 4, 2026, at Ikpoba Hill in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area.

Balogun explained that the suspect allegedly abducted the child shortly after the boy went out with his mother. Within minutes, the child reportedly disappeared from her sight, triggering concern in the area.

The suspect was said to have hurriedly taken the child into a commercial bus heading towards King’s Square in Benin City. However, his actions soon raised suspicion. The bus driver reportedly noticed a clear lack of resemblance between the child and the suspect and questioned him about their destination.

In response, the suspect allegedly gave conflicting explanations. He initially claimed the child was ill and was being taken to the hospital. Moments later, when questioned by a female passenger, he reportedly said he was going to buy shoes for the boy. The inconsistent responses prompted both the driver and the passenger to raise an alarm.

Balogun said the alarm attracted ESSC operatives who were on routine patrol in the area. The officers swiftly intercepted the vehicle, arrested the suspect and rescued the child unharmed.

The ESSC commander confirmed that the boy has since been reunited with his family. He assured residents that the Corps remains committed to combating crime across the state.

The suspect has been handed over to the Edo State Police Command for further investigation and prosecution.
