The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 42-year-old commercial bus driver, Osabohien Ogieva, in connection with the alleged murder of his 32-year-old girlfriend, Joy Jerome, in Edo State.

The tragic incident occurred in Ikpe community, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area. Confirming the arrest on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Eno Ikoedem, disclosed that the lifeless body of the victim was discovered along a roadside close to a river on January 10, 2026.

According to the police spokesperson, operatives of the Idogbo Police Division swiftly responded to a distress call from residents. The body was immediately evacuated to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel confirmed her death before it was deposited at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased, who resided in the Upper Sakponba area of Benin City, was in a romantic relationship with the suspect. Further inquiries by the police led to the arrest of Ogieva, who reportedly confessed during interrogation.

SP Ikoedem stated that the suspect admitted to having a serious disagreement with the deceased on January 9, 2026, while he was conveying her in his commercial bus. The disagreement allegedly escalated, after which Ogieva is accused of abandoning her body near a river in Ikpe community before fleeing the area to evade arrest.

Investigators also revealed that the suspect later contacted the family of the deceased, falsely claiming that he had not seen her for several days, a move police believe was intended to divert suspicion.

The Edo State Police Command confirmed that Ogieva is currently in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. The command reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice for the victim and warned that acts of violence will be met with the full weight of the law.
