Dino Melaye, a former senator, has spoken out against President Bola Tinubu for putting forward Mahmood Yakubu, the former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as a nominee for an ambassadorial role.

According to report, Yakubu is one of over 30 people whose names were recently sent to the Senate by President Tinubu for ambassadorial appointments.

The nomination has sparked backlash, with some critics saying the president is “rewarding” Yakubu for his past role at INEC.

Melaye, in a Facebook post on Wednesday, said Tinubu is more focused on politics than on running the country. He called the nomination of Yakubu a disgrace and said it shows the president does not care about the country’s well-being.

He wrote: “It is an absurdity that President Tinubu has abandoned governance for politics. The appointment of Mahmud Yakubu as an ambassador is shameless and shows that this Idi Amin-like government doesn’t give a damn. Indeed, there was a country.”
