Devo’s ‘Whip It’ Misunderstood Legacy Explored in New Netflix Documentary

The new Netflix “Devo” sheds on the Ohio-born art- band known for their hit “Whip It” and eccentric image, arguing they were misunderstood and wrongly trivialized. Directed by Chris Smith, the film delves into Devo’s rich conceptual roots, combining archival footage and with figures like David Bowie and Iggy Pop.

Founders Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh, who met at Kent State during the 1970 shootings, infused the band with antiestablishment and philosophical themes, coining the concept of “de-evolution” to societal regression. Their music and visuals often addressed deeper issues such as conformity, violence, and capitalist excess, as seen in politically charged videos like “ World” and “Freedom of Choice.”

Despite early media misinterpretation and commercial pigeonholing, Devo’s blend of satire, visual art, and pop culture left a . Today, they are as pioneers of multimedia expression and influence modern acts like Rage Against the Machine.

The documentary also chronicles the band’s to fame, particularly after the release of their breakout hit “Whip It.” The film rare archival footage and in-depth interviews with band members and other collaborators.

In the lead-up to the film’s release, DEVO will launch a YouTube video series titled Devolutionary Times, where they’ll upload restored versions of their classic music videos and films every two weeks. The series kicks this week with their 1976 short film The Truth About De-Evolution, directed by Chuck Statler.

Later this year, DEVO will embark on their farewell “Cosmic De-Evolution Tour” alongside the B-52s. Across 11 dates, the band will play to fans in Angeles, Toronto, Austin, and more. DEVO will also open for My Chemical Romance at their show this August.

Formed in 1973, DEVO gained major-label attention with their debut album Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, produced with support from David Bowie and Iggy Pop. Their 1980 smash hit “Whip It” peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a staple in history, cementing DEVO’s in pop culture.

The documentary “Devo” is set to on Netflix on August 19, 2025, an in-depth look at the band’s misunderstood legacy and their impact on music and culture.
