Dele Momodu, a leading figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has dismissed suggestions that the opposition pushed U.S. President Donald Trump to call out alleged attacks on Christians in Nigeria.
Momodu said in an interview that those who point at the opposition have simply “run out of ideas.” He added, “Anyone suggesting the opposition is behind this is simply showing a lack of ideas,” and argued the opposition is focused on rebuilding at home, not lobbying abroad.
He criticised a pattern in Nigerian politics where the ruling side blames others when things go wrong. Momodu said recent claims by the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, that the opposition had stoked Trump’s words and taken “politics taken too far.” were misplaced.
Momodu urged the Tinubu government to stop turning the matter into a political fight and to deal with the real problem: insecurity. He pointed to the voice of Jos cleric Prophet Isa El-Buba in saying Christians are being targeted and stressed the wider human cost. “He never said Muslims are not being killed, but life has become so cheap. Even when 100 people are killed, the president can still travel that same night, no empathy, no sympathy. That is the concern being raised. It has nothing to do with politics,” he said.
The row grew after Trump named Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ and warned of possible military steps if attacks on Christians continued. Momodu said such threats should prompt leaders to act on security and to avoid using the issue for party politics.
