Dele Farotimi Denies Seeking Intervention in Afe Babalola Defamation Case

Human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has firmly asking anyone to plead with Senior Advocate of , Afe Babalola, regarding the ongoing defamation lawsuit filed against him. The case stems from Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Justice System, which led to the trial currently underway in Ekiti State.

Recent reports speculated that Labour ‘s 2023 candidate, Peter Obi, had visited Afe Babalola to intercede on Farotimi’s behalf. However, during a prison visit, Farotimi unequivocally dismissed such claims. Speaking through his lawyer, Tope Temokun, he clarified his stance and disappointment at any suggestion that he sought an apology or out-of-court settlement.

Temokun shared of his conversation with Farotimi:

“I visited Mr. Dele Farotimi at the correctional facility in Ado-Ekiti to the confusion surrounding recent events, particularly the visit of Mr. Peter Obi to Aare Afe Babalola and subsequently to Mr. Farotimi himself. The narrative circulating implied that conditions for release, apologies, or settlements were being negotiated. I asked him directly about this, clarity on his position and message.”

Farotimi’s response was unambiguous:

“He told me that anyone familiar with his principles and philosophy should know that he would never ask anyone to plead on his behalf in a matter involving his published work. He expressed disappointment in anyone who might believe otherwise, myself as part of his team.”

Farotimi reiterated his unwavering commitment to his beliefs and refused to compromise his principles, even in the face of legal challenges.

The controversy began following the publication of Farotimi’s book, which critiques Nigeria’s criminal justice system. Afe Babalola’s petition alleges that the content defamed his character, prompting the ongoing legal proceedings. Farotimi’s refusal to seek underscores his steadfastness in defending the of his work.
