The Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) has welcomed the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, into the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing his defection as a historic milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The coalition said Obi’s move represents a clear shift toward principled politics, integrity, and people-centred governance, values it believes are urgently needed in the country’s political space.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Jos, COPDEM National Chairman, Prince Rwang Pam Jr., said the group’s support for the ADC and Peter Obi was both strategic and deliberate. He explained that COPDEM is a political action group committed to protecting the interests of Nigerians and strengthening democratic opposition.
According to Pam, the coalition moved into the ADC to enhance nationwide mobilisation for Obi and other like-minded leaders joining the party, with the aim of building a strong and credible opposition ahead of future elections.
“COPDEM, with over five million members, pledges its full support to the ADC and Peter Obi, as we share common values of democracy, social justice, accountability, and anti-corruption,” he stated.
He added that the ADC is positioning itself as a movement-driven party powered by young people, workers, and marginalised groups, with a leadership philosophy centred on competence, character, and capacity rather than political patronage.
Pam further emphasised the need for unity, hope, and collective action in the struggle for a better Nigeria, urging citizens across the country to join COPDEM and actively participate in shaping a just, inclusive, and democratic nation.
He concluded by calling on Nigerians to prepare for 2027, describing the period ahead as critical to redefining the country’s political direction.
