There is cautious optimism among liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) retailers as cooking gas becomes more readily available, with prices currently ranging between N1,000 and N1,400 per kilogramme, depending on location and seller.

A recent market survey showed that LPG supply improved towards the end of 2025, a relief after the severe scarcity experienced in September and October following a shutdown of gas facilities due to a rift between the Dangote Refinery and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).

Consumers in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, and other states reported purchasing LPG at rates between N1,050 and N1,400 per kilogramme, while some major marketers sold directly to end-users at as low as N900/kg. Many consumers expressed hope that prices would drop below N1,000/kg in the new year to encourage cleaner cooking alternatives.

Speaking on the market situation, the National Chairman of the LPG Retailers branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Ayobami Olarinoye, said the market has stabilised with some off-takers now receiving regular gas supply in Apapa, Lagos. He noted that retail prices depend on location and logistics, ranging between N1,300 and N1,400/kg in urban retail outlets, but could be lower at filling stations and gas plants.

Olarinoye explained that retailers currently purchase LPG from major marketers at prices between N960 and N1,050/kg, while plant owners selling directly to consumers may offer prices below N1,000/kg. He emphasised that the improved supply has helped moderate prices compared to the spike to around N2,000/kg seen during the PENGASSAN strike last October.

The Dangote Refinery has also indicated plans to sell LPG directly to consumers in order to further reduce costs and improve accessibility nationwide.
