Chelsea’s hopes for a top-eight finish in the UEFA Champions League took a blow with a 2-1 loss to Atalanta in Bergamo on December 9, 2025. The match started promisingly for Chelsea, as João Pedro scored in the 25th minute. After initial offside interference, a VAR review confirmed the goal, following a precise low cross from Reece James.
However, Atalanta fought back strong in the second half. In the 55th minute, Charles De Ketelaere provided a pinpoint cross that Gianluca Scamacca headed into the net, equalizing at 1-1. This shift in the game’s momentum heavily favored Atalanta, who took the lead in the 83rd minute when De Ketelaere, after receiving a pass from Marten de Roon, fired a low shot that deflected off Chelsea defender Malo Gusto, wrong-footing goalkeeper Robert Sánchez and securing a 2-1 lead.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca expressed disappointment, noting the loss of control after conceding the first goal. He highlighted the need for better concentration, stating that both goals conceded were avoidable.
Following the defeat, Chelsea remains with 10 points in their Champions League group, outside the automatic qualification spots for the knockouts, while Atalanta, with 13 points, strengthens its position for direct qualification. Chelsea now faces a challenging road ahead and must regroup to improve their chances of advancing in the tournament.
