Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has downplayed concerns over a reported rift between Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman following Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The incident, which occurred during the second half of the match, sparked widespread discussion among fans after cameras captured a heated exchange between the two star forwards.

Nigeria were firmly in control of the encounter when tensions flared in the 63rd minute. At the time, Osimhen had already scored twice, while Lookman had added a goal of his own, putting the Super Eagles three goals ahead. According to match reports, Osimhen became visibly frustrated after Lookman failed to pass the ball to him in a promising position. The Napoli striker reacted angrily, pointing and shouting at his teammate before being restrained by captain Wilfred Ndidi.

Lookman, who had already provided an assist for Osimhen and created multiple chances in the game, responded verbally as emotions briefly boiled over on the pitch. The exchange surprised many supporters, given Nigeria’s dominance and comfortable lead at that stage of the match.

Moments after the incident, Osimhen asked to be substituted and was replaced by Paul Onuachu. At full time, he headed straight down the tunnel, skipping the on-field celebrations, further fueling speculation about internal tensions within the squad.

Addressing the situation after the match, Chelle refused to discuss the matter in detail, stressing that it would be handled internally. He emphasized the importance of maintaining unity within the team as Nigeria continue their pursuit of a fourth AFCON title, making it clear that internal issues would not be aired publicly.

However, the coach later appeared to ease concerns with a subtle but telling gesture. Chelle shared a photo on Instagram showing Osimhen and Lookman celebrating together after the match, captioned simply, “Felicitations.” The post was widely interpreted as a signal that any disagreement had been resolved and that harmony had been restored within the camp.

On the field, both players remain central to Nigeria’s impressive AFCON campaign. Lookman has emerged as one of the tournament’s standout performers, recording three goals and four assists, while Osimhen has also found the net three times. With momentum firmly on their side, the Super Eagles now turn their focus to a quarter-final clash against either Algeria or DR Congo as they continue their quest for continental glory.
