An unstable standoff started at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja as two opposing factions attempted to hold separate meetings on the same day, creating some confusion and unrest.
The faction aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, led by National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, arrived early at Wadata Plaza to convene its scheduled Board of Trustees (BoT) and National Executive Committee (NEC) sessions. Their presence was backed by a heavy security detail, which took control of key entry points around the premises.
The tensions got worse when members of the rival faction, loyal to newly elected National Chairman Taminu Turaki—who emerged from the recent Ibadan convention—arrived and were denied access to the building. Despite the blockade, two governors managed to breach the security cordon and enter the facility.
As more members from Turaki’s camp attempted to gain entry, security forces responded with gunfire and teargas, triggering panic and forcing many to flee the scene.
Earlier in the day, Anyanwu had addressed journalists from his office, downplaying the security presence as standard protocol to ensure order. He affirmed that his group was fully prepared to proceed with its planned meetings.
The incident highlights the deepening internal divisions within the PDP, as rival factions continue to battle for legitimacy and control of the party’s leadership structure.
