On July 8, 2025, the Catholic community in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, gathered at Saint Joseph Cathedral to honor Floribert Bwana Chui Bin Kositi, a customs official and member of the Community of Sant’Egidio, who was recently beatified by the Vatican. Kositi was recognized as a martyr for his steadfast refusal to accept a bribe to allow the importation of spoiled rice from Rwanda into Congo in 2007. His unwavering commitment to integrity and public health led to his abduction and subsequent murder, making him a symbol of resistance against corruption.

The beatification ceremony, held on June 15, 2025, at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome, was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro. Pope Francis recognized Kositi as a martyr of the faith, emphasizing his act as a stand against corruption and a model of ordinary holiness. This recognition aligns with the Pope’s broader understanding of martyrdom as a social justice concept, highlighting individuals who are killed for doing God’s work and following the Gospel.

In Goma, the beatification has been a source of profound emotion and hope for the local community. Residents, including close friend Aline Minani, expressed gratitude and saw Kositi as a spiritual advocate and symbol of integrity. Minani stated, “We now have a spokesperson, someone who can testify for us, who speaks on our behalf to God, so that we may experience the joy of the dream Floribert had: to see everyone.

Kositi’s legacy continues to inspire efforts against corruption in Congo. The Floribert Bwana Ch … School of Peace in Goma, named in his honor, advocates for social justice and serves as a beacon of hope for the community. School director Charles Kalimba noted, “It’s a lesson for every generation, for the next generation, for the present generation and for all people. Floribert’s life is a positive point that must be presented to the Congolese nation.”
