The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended a 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos for attempting to import a large quantity of ‘Canadian Loud,’ a potent strain of synthetic cannabis. According to a statement issued on Sunday, October 6, by Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy at the NDLEA Headquarters in Abuja, Munju was arrested during the inward clearance of passengers from a KLM flight originating from Canada.
The suspect, who was arriving in Nigeria for the first time, was found with 74 parcels of the illegal substance, weighing a total of 35.20 kilograms, concealed in two of her three bags. The discovery was made during a joint inspection of her luggage at Terminal 1 of the Lagos airport on Thursday, October 3, 2024.
In her statement to authorities, Munju revealed that she had been recruited through an online platform to traffic the drugs for a promised payment of 10,000 Canadian dollars upon successful delivery in Lagos. She admitted to accepting the offer due to financial pressure, as she needed the funds to pay for her ongoing master’s degree program in Canada.
This arrest underscores the continued vigilance of Nigerian authorities in combating the illegal drug trade, which has seen a rise in sophisticated smuggling attempts. The NDLEA’s successful interception of this synthetic cannabis shipment is part of a broader effort to disrupt the trafficking of dangerous drugs into the country, a growing concern for Nigerian law enforcement.
The case of Adrienne Munju highlights the international nature of drug trafficking networks and the involvement of individuals who may be drawn into these operations due to financial desperation. NDLEA’s Babafemi noted that investigations are ongoing, and the agency remains committed to prosecuting those involved in drug-related offenses, regardless of nationality or background.
As Munju awaits further legal proceedings, her arrest serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with drug trafficking. The NDLEA continues to intensify its efforts to safeguard Nigeria’s borders from the illegal drug trade and prevent harmful substances from entering the country.
Wow, she must have had a wild travel checklist! But seriously, what if she was set up? Just a thought…
I cant believe they arrested her for that! Synthetic cannabis is harmless compared to other drugs. Let her go!
I dont buy the whole innocent woman caught trafficking drugs narrative. She knew what she was doing. Justice served.
I wonder if she was set up or just really unlucky. Either way, harsh punishment seems excessive.
I dont buy it! Theres gotta be more to this story. Maybe she was set up or didnt know what she was carrying.
This article is biased! Maybe she didnt know what she was carrying. Lets not jump to conclusions so quickly.
Wow, I cant believe some people still think trafficking drugs is a good idea. What was she even thinking?
Wow, why are we even surprised? Canadas reputation tarnished again. Lock her up and throw away the key!
Wow, cant believe they arrested her! But honestly, who hasnt thought about smuggling synthetic cannabis in their luggage? Just saying…
This is outrageous! How could someone be so reckless? Lock her up and throw away the key!
I think the punishment for drug trafficking should be harsher. These criminals ruin lives and destroy communities. Lock them up!
Harsher punishment wont solve the root issue. Rehabilitation and prevention are key. Think bigger.
Why are we focusing on this one Canadian woman when there are bigger fish to fry in the world of drug trafficking? 🤔
