Authorities in California have arrested a man found in possession of illegal firearms shortly before a rally held by former President Donald Trump on Saturday. The incident occurred around 5 pm at a security checkpoint near Avenue 52 and Celebration Drive in Coachella Valley.
Deputies stopped a black SUV at the checkpoint, and upon investigation, they identified the driver as Vem Miller, a 49-year-old resident of Las Vegas. Miller was discovered to be carrying a shotgun, a loaded handgun, and a high-capacity magazine, all in violation of state laws.
Miller was immediately taken into custody, and authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing.
In a report published by Sky News, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco commented on the situation during a press conference on Sunday. He told reporters that his deputies may have “stopped the third assassination attempt,” suggesting that the incident could have posed a severe threat.
Sheriff Bianco explained that deputies grew suspicious when the driver approached the security perimeter. “There were many irregularities that popped up,” he said, noting that the interior of the vehicle appeared disorganized and that the SUV had an obviously fake license plate.
The arrest highlights the heightened security measures in place during high-profile events, particularly those involving political figures like former President Trump. Sheriff Bianco commended his team for their vigilance and quick response, which he believes may have averted a potentially serious situation.
