The General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football, Veron Mosengo Omba, has stepped down after five years in office, citing a desire to leave with “peace of mind” following a turbulent tenure.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Congolese administrator said he was satisfied to exit after clearing doubts and suions that had surrounded his leadership. He added that he leaves the organization stronger and more prosperous than when he assumed office.

His resignation comes in the wake of controversy surrounding the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 Final. In the dramatic final, Senegal initially secured a 1 0 victory over Morocco after extra time. However, CAF later overturned the result, awarding Morocco a 3 0 win after ruling that Senegal forfeited the match following a late penalty dispute. Senegal has since filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Mosengo Omba’s departure also follows CAF’s decision to postpone the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026, which will now take place later in the year in Morocco. The delay has added to concerns over scheduling and planning within African football’s governing body.

During his tenure, Mosengo Omba faced criticism over governance issues, including claims he remained in office beyond the official retirement age and allegations of a difficult working environment. An internal investigation, however, cleared him of wrongdoing.

CAF Competitions Director Samson Adamu has been appointed interim General Secretary while the process to find a permanent replacement begins.

Meanwhile, CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced major reforms to African football competitions. The Africa Cup of Nations will expand from 24 to 28 teams and transition into a four year cycle after the 2027 edition, which will be hosted across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

To fill the competitive gap, CAF also plans to introduce a Nations League style tournament from 2029, involving all 54 member associations and aligning with FIFA international windows.
